|John Wesley Downs III died peacefully in his home in Eureka Springs February 7, 2008, surrounded by his family, at the age of 90. He was born September 19, 1917 in Waco Texas, son of J.W. (Monk) and Leona (Byron) Downs, grandson of the late J. W. Downs, a pioneer Texas newspaper editor who, with his father, established the Waco Examiner in 1870.
John, a World War II veteran served as a Sergeant in the 66th AAF Base Unit, earned a Masters Degree in Physics from Texas A&M, retired from Petty Geophysical Engineering in San Antonio, and settled in Bush Arkansas to raise his family. Fishing and gardening his passions, evident in a grove of towering chestnut trees shading a favorite fishing hole where Spider Creek flows into White River.
John is survived by his life-long love, Sybil (Rose) Downs, eldest son, John Wesley Downs of Doha Qatar and wife Nancy of Eureka Springs, daughter Julie and husband, John Van Woy of Eureka Springs, 5 devoted grandchildren and one energetic great-grandson. Downs Matthews of Houston Texas, cousin and childhood pal, knew John as “Ahyou”.
Preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Downs Healer, and youngest son Phillihp Merlin Downs.
